The records division is responsible for distributing and maintaining all police reports written by the Muncie police department. To accomplish these tasks the records division is staffed by three civilian clerks and one supervisor who oversee the division’s daily operation.
Each day records clerks enter the previous day’s written reports into the department’s records management system. Those reports are filed and retained for a prescribed number of years before being destroyed. All police reports are permanently maintained in LERMS.
Individuals can get a copy of a police report in-person or by mail in the following manner. In-person by coming to the records division located on the first floor of city hall. The records division is open Monday through Friday (Excluding Holidays).
Those individuals wanting to receive a police report by mail must include the following:
- Your request must give specific information about the report you want mailed to you, i.e., case report (CR) number, date of the vehicle crash or crime, driver or victim’s name listed on the report.
- A self addressed stamped envelope.
- Certified check or money order for $0.10 per page for Crime Reports. Crash Reports are $8.00 each. (NO PERSONAL CHECKS)
The records division provides a number of additional services to the general public on a daily basis. Those services include, criminal history checks, collection of local fees for gun permit applications, and fingerprinting job applicants. Other services and their associated costs are listed on the attached list of service fees.
